Santiment Review

Santiment combines social sentiment, on-chain activity and developer data in one platform, Sanbase, and now pipes 30+ of those metrics into Claude and ChatGPT via MCP. Pro costs $49 a month; the free tier is real but runs 30 days behind.

Our verdict

Good value for data-driven traders: social, on-chain and dev-activity metrics for $49 a month, plus one of the earliest crypto MCP connectors. The AI layer is mostly a connector rather than a native assistant, the free tier lags by 30 days, and Sanbase has a steep learning curve.

Real AI 3.6
Security 4.4
Pricing transparency 4.1
Track record 4.3
Usability 3.6

Best for: Retail traders and quants who want social and on-chain metrics together, ideally queried through Claude or ChatGPT.

Key takeaways

  • Santiment blends social, on-chain and development data, so you can check whether hype is matched by real activity.
  • The MCP connector brings 30+ metrics across 500+ assets into Claude and ChatGPT.
  • Sanbase Pro is $49/mo ($529/yr) with a 14-day trial. Max is $249/mo for the real-time API.
  • The free plan has a 30-day data lag: useful for learning and history, not for current trades.

This Santiment review looks at a tool that has been quietly useful for years and suddenly became more relevant: once you can ask Claude or ChatGPT a question and have it pull Santiment metrics in the background, a dense, expert-oriented dashboard turns into something an ordinary trader can use. Santiment was early to that shift, and it is the main reason to look at it again.

We checked plans, limits and the AI features on Santiment's official pages on 21 October 2026. Here is what Sanbase offers, what the Santiment MCP connector actually does, and whether the paid tiers are worth it.

What Santiment is

Santiment is a market-intelligence platform built around one idea: price moves are easier to understand when you can see what the crowd is saying, what wallets are doing, and whether developers are still shipping, side by side. Sanbase is the web app where you chart those metrics, build screeners and set alerts. Santiment also publishes research and "Insights" based on its data.

Compared with pure sentiment tools, its edge is the combination. If social volume on a token spikes while daily active addresses stay flat and development activity has stalled, that tells a very different story from a spike backed by rising network use. Few tools let you check all three in one place at this price.

The metrics that matter

Santiment's metric catalogue is large. These are the groups and the metrics most traders actually use:

CategoryExamplesWhat it helps answer
SocialSocial volume, social dominance, weighted sentiment, trending wordsIs the crowd euphoric, fearful or bored?
On-chainDaily active addresses, MVRV, NVT, network profit/loss, holder distributionIs real usage rising? Are holders in profit?
On-chain labelsExchange inflow/outflow, whale transaction count, top holdersAre coins moving to exchanges to be sold?
DevelopmentDevelopment activity, GitHub contributorsIs the project still being built?
MarketPrice, volume, funding rates, open interest, ETF flowsHow crowded is the trade?

Social dominance and weighted sentiment are the most cited for contrarian trading: extreme positive readings often come near local tops, extreme fear near bottoms. That pattern is a tendency, not a rule. Our guide to AI crypto sentiment analysis explains how to use extremes without getting run over by a trend.

Santiment MCP and the AI layer

Santiment's AI offering lives at ai.santiment.net and has two parts:

  • MCP connector. Plug Santiment into Claude or ChatGPT and ask questions in plain English. The connector exposes "30+ metrics across 500+ assets", historical data, asset screening and social-trend monitoring.
  • Skills. Modular agent toolkits, including backtesting, so an AI assistant can test a simple rule on Santiment data.

Santiment lists strategy "vibecoding", more assistants beyond Claude, and live widgets inside chat as coming soon. The core Sanbase product does not describe itself as AI on the pricing page, and that is the honest framing: Santiment is a data company, and the AI comes from the model you connect. That is our "LLM assistant" label, not machine learning.

This setup works well with Claude in particular, which can hold Santiment, Nansen and other crypto connectors in one conversation. Our best AI models for crypto trading comparison covers which assistants handle MCP data best.

Every plan includes some API access, but the real-time API without lag needs Max. Pro is the sweet spot for most traders: $49 is about the cheapest serious crypto-data subscription we track, and the annual price works out to roughly $44 a month (a 10% discount). Max is for people building systems that poll data continuously. Value scores are our editorial judgement.

The free tier and its 30-day lag

The free plan is more generous than most in features and stingier in freshness. Restrictions as listed in October 2026:

  • Data delayed by 30 days
  • Top-3 trending coins hidden
  • One screener, without filters
  • Three alerts
  • Two years of chart history

A 30-day lag rules out using it for current trade decisions. It is still a good classroom: you can study how social dominance and MVRV behaved around past tops and bottoms, learn what the metrics mean, and decide whether paying for live data would change your trading. Use the 14-day Pro trial once you know what you want to test.

SAN token discounts: useful, with a caveat

SAN holders get 20% off. Burning SAN or providing SAN liquidity can unlock Pro in full. For an existing holder that is a real saving. For a new user, buying a token to save on a $49 subscription adds price risk that can easily exceed the discount. We would pay in cash unless you already hold SAN for other reasons. Token-linked access is common in crypto data products; it is not a problem in itself, but it does give the company a commercial interest in the token, so keep that in mind when reading its market commentary. For more on token risk, see AI crypto coins explained.

Security and reputation

Like other data providers, Santiment does not need exchange keys or wallet access, so the security risk is limited to your account and API key. Use a unique password and two-factor authentication where offered, and keep API keys out of public code.

Reputation data is thin. Santiment's Trustpilot profile showed 3.2 out of 5 based on a single review on 21 October 2026, with no reviews in the last 12 months, an unclaimed profile and Trustpilot's "may be associated with high-risk investments" flag. One review is not evidence of anything. We found no reported security incidents in the material we checked, and the long-running research output and public metrics documentation count in its favour.

Pros and cons

What works

  • Social, on-chain and development data in one platform
  • Pro at $49/mo is cheap for this breadth
  • Early MCP connector for Claude and ChatGPT
  • 14-day trial on Pro
  • Detailed public documentation of metrics
  • No exchange keys or wallet access needed

Watch out for

  • Free tier data is 30 days behind
  • Sanbase interface has a steep learning curve
  • AI layer is a connector, not a native assistant
  • Real-time API needs the $249 Max plan
  • Token-linked discounts create a mild conflict of interest

Who Santiment suits

Santiment fits traders who like evidence and are willing to learn what metrics mean: swing traders watching crowd extremes, analysts who want to see whether social hype has on-chain support, and quants who want a cheap source of combined data for backtests. With the MCP connector it also suits anyone who prefers to ask questions in Claude rather than build charts. It is less suited to pure memecoin chasers, who need the broader social coverage of LunarCrush, or to anyone who wants buy and sell calls handed to them. Santiment does not trade; if automation is the goal, our best AI crypto trading bots ranking is the better starting point.

Data from Santiment, execution on an exchange you can verify

Santiment helps you decide; it never holds your coins. When you act on a signal, the venue matters. CEX.IO has operated since 2013, holds money transmitter licences in 39 US states plus DC as a FinCEN-registered MSB, and is FCA-registered in the UK. A sensible split: research with AI tools, buy and hold on a regulated account.

Registrations checked October 2026 on the company's legal pages. Availability depends on your country; crypto is high-risk.

How to start with Santiment

01

Learn on the free plan

Study how social dominance, weighted sentiment and MVRV behaved around past tops and bottoms. The 30-day lag does not matter for history.

02

Pick two or three metrics

Choose a small set you understand, for example social dominance plus exchange inflows, rather than trying to watch everything.

03

Start the 14-day Pro trial with a plan

Test a specific idea during the trial so you can judge whether live data changes your decisions.

04

Connect the MCP to your assistant

Ask Claude or ChatGPT for comparisons and date ranges, then verify one or two readings in Sanbase.

05

Backtest before trusting a rule

Use Skills or your own code to test a rule across bull and bear markets. One good year is not proof.

Final verdict

Santiment gets a 4.0. It is the best-value combination of social, on-chain and development data we have found, and its MCP connector makes that data far more accessible than the Sanbase interface alone. For $49 a month, a disciplined trader gets a lot of useful context.

It stops short of a higher score because the AI is borrowed rather than built, the free tier is too delayed for live use, and real-time API access costs five times as much as Pro. Frequently asked questions

What is Santiment?

Santiment is a crypto market-intelligence provider that combines social data (sentiment, social volume, trending words), on-chain data (active addresses, MVRV, exchange flows, whale transactions) and development activity from GitHub. Its main app is called Sanbase. It now also offers an MCP connector so you can query its data from Claude and ChatGPT.

Is Santiment free?

There is a free plan, but it is restricted: data has a 30-day lag, the top-3 trending coins are hidden, you get one screener without filters, three alerts and two years of chart history. That is fine for learning the metrics and studying past cycles, but not for current trading decisions. Sanbase Pro at $49/month removes the lag.

How much is Sanbase Pro?

As of October 2026 Sanbase Pro costs $49 a month or $529 a year, with a 14-day free trial. Sanbase Max costs $249 a month or $2,700 a year and adds the real-time API with no lag. SAN token holders get 20% off, and burning SAN or providing SAN liquidity can unlock Pro in full.

What is the Santiment MCP connector?

It is a Model Context Protocol server that lets AI assistants such as Claude and ChatGPT pull Santiment data directly. According to ai.santiment.net it covers 30+ metrics across 500+ assets, with historical data, asset screening and social-trend monitoring inside the chat. Santiment also offers "Skills", agent toolkits that include backtesting.

Santiment vs LunarCrush: which is better?

LunarCrush has the bigger social dataset (100M+ posts a day, 4,000+ coins) and is sold as an API product from $72/month. Santiment is cheaper at $49, and adds on-chain and developer metrics, so you can check whether social hype is matched by real network activity. For most individual traders Santiment is better value; for agent builders who need pure social data at scale, LunarCrush wins. See our LunarCrush review.

Is Santiment data reliable?

On-chain metrics such as active addresses or exchange flows are derived from public blockchain data, so they are reproducible in principle, though exchange-wallet labels can be incomplete. Social metrics depend on Santiment's source list and filtering, which are less transparent. No metric predicts price on its own. Use them in combination, and test any rule over several market regimes.
