Key takeaways
- Coinbase has no native trading bot or copy trading. It has recurring buys, an API and agent infrastructure.
- Coinbase for Agents (11 June 2026) lets AI assistants like Claude and ChatGPT trade and move money on your account through MCP or a CLI, with limits.
- For developers: AgentKit (November 2024), x402 payments (May 2025) and Agentic Wallets (11 February 2026) on EVM chains and Solana, gasless on Base.
- Coinbase holds a MiCA licence from Luxembourg (June 2025). In May 2025 it disclosed a customer data theft via bribed support contractors; no funds or keys were exposed.
If you search for Coinbase AI trading, you will not find a "start bot" button. Coinbase has taken a different route from Binance or Bitget. Instead of building its own AI trader, it has built the plumbing that lets other AI systems hold wallets, pay for things and place orders, and then opened that plumbing to ordinary customers.
For traders, that means you can connect an AI assistant you already use to your Coinbase account and give it a budget. For developers, it means a full stack for agents that need money. This page covers both, plus the licence and security context. Facts are from Coinbase announcements and press coverage checked in October 2026. For the wider market, see our comparison of 15 exchanges with AI tools.
Coinbase's AI strategy in one paragraph
Coinbase is betting that AI agents will become economic actors that buy data, pay for services and trade, and that they will need wallets and payment rails to do it. AgentKit gives agents wallets. x402 lets them pay over the web. Agentic Wallets add spending limits and gasless transactions on Base, Coinbase's Ethereum layer-2 network. Coinbase for Agents brings the same idea to retail accounts. None of these products decides what to trade. That is the model's job, and yours.
Coinbase AI products, in order
| Product | Launched | What it does | Who it is for |
|---|---|---|---|
| AgentKitcoinbase.com ↗ | November 2024 | Toolkit that gives AI agents their own crypto wallets | Developers |
| x402 | May 2025 (V2 around Dec 2025) | Open protocol using HTTP 402 so agents can pay per request | Developers, API providers |
| Agentic Wallets | 11 February 2026 | Wallets for any agent on EVM chains and Solana, gasless on Base, with spending limits | Developers |
| Coinbase for Agents | 11 June 2026 | Lets AI assistants such as Claude and ChatGPT trade and move money via MCP or CLI, with limits | Retail traders |
| AI customer support | Not dated | Claude-powered support chatbot and agent assist | All customers |
The x402 history is a little messy. Different sources give different dates for the x402 Foundation and the second version, so we stick to the May 2025 introduction and an approximate V2 date. Coinbase says x402 has processed more than 50 million transactions, which is its own figure.
Coinbase for Agents: AI trading for regular users
Coinbase for Agents is the product most readers want. Launched on 11 June 2026, it lets an AI assistant such as Claude or ChatGPT connect to your Coinbase account and trade crypto or move money on your behalf, within limits you set. The connection runs through an MCP server (the standard many AI assistants use to call tools) or a command-line interface.
What you can realistically do with it
- Ask your assistant for a portfolio summary and have it rebalance to target weights.
- Run a rules-based DCA plan that the model executes and reports on.
- Combine research and execution: have the model read a token's data, explain its view and, if you agree, place a small order.
What it will not do is make the model a good trader. The evidence on LLMs trading with real money is poor; in the Alpha Arena competition, most model runs ended in a loss. Use Coinbase for Agents to execute a plan you understand, and keep the limits tight. Our ChatGPT for crypto trading guide has safe prompt patterns.
No native bots, but recurring buys
Coinbase does not run grid bots, DCA bots with safety orders, or copy trading. It does offer recurring buys, which cover the most common automation need: buying a fixed amount on a schedule. If that is all you need, it is simpler and cheaper than a subscription bot. Our guide to DCA in crypto explains when a recurring buy beats a lump sum, and the DCA calculator lets you test it.
For anything more complex, you can connect a third-party bot through the Coinbase API, or let an agent run the logic through Coinbase for Agents. Coinbase Advanced fees depend on your tier and are best checked on the official Advanced fee page; third-party figures for the base tier conflict, so we do not repeat them.
AI customer support
Coinbase also uses AI on the support side. According to a customer case study published by Anthropic, Coinbase runs a Claude-powered support chatbot and an agent-assist tool for its human support staff. That matters less for trading than for getting answers about a stuck deposit at 3 a.m.
One caution follows from the 2025 data theft described below: criminals now impersonate Coinbase support constantly. Coinbase's chatbot lives inside the app and website. Nobody from Coinbase will call you and ask you to move funds to a "safe wallet".
For builders: AgentKit, x402 and Agentic Wallets
If you are building an agent, Coinbase's stack is among the most complete. Here is how the pieces fit, and how we would use them safely.
| Piece | Use it when | Safety control to set |
|---|---|---|
| AgentKit | Your agent needs its own on-chain wallet to hold and send funds | Fund it with a small working balance only |
| Agentic Wallets | You want a managed wallet for an agent on EVM or Solana with gasless Base transactions | Per-transaction and total spending limits |
| x402 | Your agent pays for data or API calls, or you sell an API to agents | Cap price per request and daily spend |
| Coinbase for Agents (MCP / CLI) | You want an assistant to trade on a Coinbase account | Account-level limits; start with read and small orders |
Start read-only
Let the agent fetch balances and prices for a week before it can place orders. Log every tool call.
Give it a separate wallet
Use AgentKit or an Agentic Wallet funded with a working balance, never your main holdings.
Set hard spending limits
Per transaction and per day. A limit is the only control that survives a model mistake or a prompt injection.
Require confirmation for large actions
Anything above a threshold should wait for a human to approve it.
Backtest the logic separately
The strategy should work as plain code before an LLM touches it. Our build an AI trading bot guide shows how.
Coinbase also runs Base, the Ethereum layer-2 network where Agentic Wallets get gasless transactions. If your agent trades on-chain rather than on the exchange, Base is the natural home for it in the Coinbase ecosystem. For a broader look at agent frameworks and on-chain agents, see AI crypto trading agents.
Licences and the customer data breach
Coinbase is one of the better-regulated venues for AI experiments. It received a MiCA licence from Luxembourg's CSSF, announced on 20 June 2025, which covers the EEA. In the US, the SEC dropped its enforcement case against Coinbase in February 2025.
Its most serious recent incident was not a hack of funds. On 15 May 2025, Coinbase disclosed that criminals had bribed overseas support contractors to steal customer data, including names, addresses and email addresses. Passwords, private keys and funds were not exposed. The attackers demanded a $20 million ransom; Coinbase refused and instead offered a $20 million bounty for information leading to their arrest. It estimated the total cost of the incident at $180 million to $400 million.
Diversify where you hold, not just what you hold
Coinbase is a strong home for agent experiments. If you want a second regulated account for buying and holding, CEX.IO has operated since 2013, holds money transmitter licences for 39 US states plus DC under a FinCEN-registered MSB, and is FCA-registered in the UK. It offers no AI agents, which keeps that account simple.
Registrations checked October 2026 on the company's legal pages. Availability depends on your country; crypto is high-risk.

Frequently asked questions
Does Coinbase have an AI trading bot?
No. Coinbase does not offer a native trading bot or copy trading. It offers recurring buys, an API, and since 11 June 2026 Coinbase for Agents, which lets AI assistants such as Claude and ChatGPT trade on your account through MCP or a command-line tool, within limits you set.
What is Coinbase for Agents?
Coinbase for Agents, launched on 11 June 2026, connects AI assistants to your Coinbase account so they can trade crypto and move money with limits. It works through an MCP server or a CLI. It is the closest thing Coinbase has to AI trading, but the strategy comes from you and the model, not from Coinbase.
What is Coinbase AgentKit?
AgentKit is Coinbase's developer toolkit, released in November 2024, for giving AI agents their own crypto wallets so they can hold funds, pay and transact on-chain. It is aimed at developers building agents, not at retail traders.
What is x402?
x402 is an open payment protocol from the Coinbase Developer Platform, introduced in May 2025. It revives the HTTP 402 "Payment Required" status so an AI agent can pay for an API call or piece of content automatically. Coinbase says x402 has handled more than 50 million transactions.
Is it safe to let an AI trade on Coinbase?
Safer than handing a raw API key to an unknown bot, if you use the limits. Set a small spending cap, keep the agent's balance separate from your savings, and review every action. The AI can still make bad trades. Read our AI trading agents guide for failure modes.
Was Coinbase hacked in 2025?
Not in the sense of stolen coins. In May 2025 Coinbase disclosed that bribed overseas support contractors had stolen some customers' personal data, such as names, addresses and emails. Passwords, private keys and funds were not exposed. Coinbase refused a $20 million ransom demand and estimated the cost at $180–400 million.
Is Coinbase available in the EU?
Yes. Coinbase received a MiCA licence from Luxembourg's CSSF, announced on 20 June 2025, which it can passport across the EEA. In the US, the SEC dropped its case against Coinbase in February 2025.
