Key takeaways
- Truly free: Freqtrade and Hummingbot (open source) and Pionex bots (you pay exchange fees and accept custody risk).
- Free tiers with caps: Bitsgap (3 COMBO bots on one exchange, 20 demo bots), WunderTrading (lifetime Free plan), Coinrule (2 rules, $3k volume, not in the EU).
- Jesse is free only on testnet. Live trading needs a lifetime licence from $899.
- Free "AI EAs" for MT4/MT5 and Telegram "AI profit bots" are mostly unverifiable and frequently scams.
Every platform in this space has learned that "free" is the best word to put in an ad. A free AI crypto trading bot can mean free software, a free tier with tight limits, or a bot that costs nothing because the company makes money on your trades and holds your funds. Those are very different deals.
We read the pricing pages of every major bot platform in October 2026 and kept only the options where you can actually run a strategy without paying a subscription. For paid picks across every category, see our ranking of the best AI crypto trading bots.
What "free" really means for an AI trading bot
There are four business models behind a free bot, and each one moves the cost somewhere else.
- Exchange-native bots. Pionex, KuCoin and Crypto.com run bots inside their exchange. No subscription, but every fill pays a trading fee and your funds sit on that exchange.
- Freemium SaaS. Bitsgap, WunderTrading and Coinrule give you a small free tier to get you into the interface, then sell upgrades. Fine for learning, rarely enough for a real portfolio.
- Open source. Freqtrade and Hummingbot cost nothing. You pay with time, a server and the risk of configuring something wrong.
- Trials. Cryptohopper (3 days), Bitsgap Pro (7 days) and WunderTrading Pro (7 days) are not free plans. Use them to test, not to trade.
The "AI" part also shrinks on free tiers. Bitsgap's AI Assistant starts on the paid Basic plan, Cryptohopper's AI strategies only come with the $129 Hero plan, and WunderTrading's MCP connector is demo-only on Free. The honest exception is FreqAI, where the machine learning is free because the whole project is.
Best free AI crypto trading bots right now
Ordered by how much you can realistically do without paying. Labels describe the type of "free" you get.
- 01 Free bots, you pay trading fees Rules + AI layerPionex
Pionex is an exchange with 16+ bots built in: spot, infinity and futures grid, DCA, rebalancing, arbitrage and more. Bots cost nothing extra; you pay 0.05% per spot trade. PionexGPT turns plain English into Signal Bot strategies. The catch is custody: your funds sit on Pionex, its licensing is hard to verify and its Trustpilot score was 2.6/5 when we checked.

- Grid bots without connecting API keys
- Our score
- 4.1 / 5
- 02 Best free tier with demo Rules + AI layerBitsgap
The Free plan is narrow: 3 COMBO bots on the EVEDEX exchange plus 20 demo bots. The demo bots are the real value, because you can practise on Bitsgap's full interface without risk. A 7-day Pro trial needs no card. The AI Assistant is only on paid plans from $29 a month, and Bitsgap rejects API keys that allow withdrawals.
- Price
- Free, then $29/mo
- Best for
- Polished grid and DCA on many exchanges

- 03 Lifetime free plan Rules + AI layerWunderTrading
After a 7-day Pro trial (no card), WunderTrading drops you to a lifetime Free plan. It is the most useful free option for TradingView signal automation across its 20 listed exchanges. The MCP server, which lets Claude or ChatGPT manage bots, is demo-only on Free. Hyperliquid users get Premium free but pay a 0.035% builder fee on each trade.
- Price
- Free, then $19/mo
- Best for
- Multi-exchange signal bots
- Our score
- 3.9 / 5
- 04 Free rule builder (non-EU) Rules + AI layerCoinrule
Coinrule's Starter plan is free with 2 live rules, 1 exchange and $3,000 of monthly volume. That is enough to automate a simple dip-buy or take-profit rule and to test its if-this-then-that builder with 350+ templates. Coinrule states it does not serve EU or EEA residents because of MiCA, so check eligibility first.
- Price
- Free, then $29.99/mo

- No-code rules, crypto and stocks

- 3.7 / 5
- 05 Free and genuinely AI Real MLFreqtrade + FreqAI
Freqtrade is GPL-3.0 open source with no paid tier, token or signal upsell. Its FreqAI module trains and retrains real machine-learning models, documented in a peer-reviewed paper. Everything is free except your time and a server. Expect to write Python and to spend weekends on backtests before you trust it with money.
- Price
- Free (GPL-3.0)
- Best for
- Developers who want real machine learning
- Our score
- 4.4 / 5
- 06 Free for market making AI agentHummingbot
Hummingbot is Apache-2.0 software run by a community foundation, with 318 connectors to centralised and decentralised exchanges. It is built for market making and arbitrage rather than simple grids. Like Freqtrade it is free to run but technical, and strategies that look profitable on paper often fail once fees and competition from faster bots are counted.
- Price
- Free (Apache-2.0)
- Best for
- Market making on CEX and DEX
Two near-misses. Altrady drops to a free tier after its 5-day trial, but its AI chat and reports run on paid credits. Jesse is a clean Python framework with research tools and MCP agent workflows, yet the free version only trades on testnets; real exchanges need a lifetime licence from $899.

The hidden costs of a free crypto AI bot
A bot that costs $0 a month can still be the most expensive thing in your setup. These are the costs we see people miss.
Trading fees on every fill
Grid bots trade constantly. Illustrative maths: a grid on $1,000 with $20 orders that fills 300 times a month pays $3 in fees at a 0.05% rate (Pionex spot) and $6 at 0.10%. That is small. Scale to $10,000 and the same activity costs $30 to $60 a month, which is more than many subscriptions. Fees are the subscription in disguise.
Volume and builder fees
Coinrule shows "0.02% of traded volume" on its paid tiers, and the page does not make clear whether that is on top of the subscription. WunderTrading's free Premium for Hyperliquid users comes with a 0.035% builder fee per trade. Neither is hidden, but neither is in the headline price.
Custody and counterparty risk
With Pionex there is no API key to leak, which is genuinely safer in one way. In exchange, Pionex holds your coins. Its homepage claims more than 100% reserves and Merkle-tree proof of reserves, but its regulatory status was not verifiable on official registers during our research, and Trustpilot reviewers complain about frozen funds and KYC disputes. A free bot on a venue you cannot withdraw from is not free.
Server, time and mistakes
Open source moves the cost to you: a VPS, updates, monitoring and the hours it takes to learn the framework. The bigger hidden cost is a misconfigured bot running unattended. Use dry-run mode until you understand every setting.
When a paid bot beats a free one
A subscription is a fixed monthly cost, so it hurts small accounts most. On $1,000, a $29 plan costs 2.9% a month, which is more than most realistic strategies earn. On $20,000, the same plan is 0.15% a month and may be worth it if it unlocks the exchange, bot count or features you need. The calculator below shows the break-even point: change the capital, subscription and expected gross return and watch the net line.
Free plan or paid plan: which leaves you more?
Fees · subscription · break-evenA "trade" here is one order (buy or sell). Exchange fees apply on top of the bot subscription.
Two rules of thumb fall out of the maths. First, with a $29 plan and a 3% net monthly return you need roughly $970 of capital just to cover the subscription (29 ÷ 0.03), before you earn anything. Second, if your strategy runs fine within a free tier's limits, there is little reason to pay: on the pricing pages we read, paid tiers mainly add capacity (more bots, exchanges, accounts or volume) and extra tools such as AI assistants. Pay for capacity and features you need, not for a hope of better results.
A grid bot specifically? Our grid bot profit calculator shows profit per grid after fees, which tells you whether the strategy is worth automating at all.
Free bot, regulated base
Free bots still need coins to trade. If you are deciding where to buy and hold them, CEX.IO has operated since 2013, is FCA-registered in the UK and lists money transmitter licences for 39 US states plus DC. It has no built-in bots, so keep your bot experiments on the platform you choose and your long-term holdings somewhere you can verify.
Registrations checked October 2026 on the company's legal pages. Availability depends on your country; crypto is high-risk.

Free AI EAs for MT4/MT5 and Telegram "AI bots"
Searches like "free AI trading bot EA MT4 MT5 crypto" and "crypto AI bot free Telegram" lead to a different world from the platforms above. Here is what you are usually looking at.
MT4 and MT5 expert advisors
MetaTrader 4 and 5 are forex and CFD platforms. An expert advisor (EA) is a script that trades inside them. When a broker offers "crypto" on MetaTrader, you are normally trading a CFD on the price, not owning bitcoin: you cannot withdraw coins, and the broker's spread and overnight financing apply. Free EAs labelled "AI" are mostly indicator-based scripts, and their published results are backtests or screenshots you cannot verify. Some are distributed on the condition that you open an account with a particular broker, which tells you who is paying for the "free" part.
Telegram AI bots
Telegram is full of bots and channels offering free AI trading. The safe ones are notification tools: many legitimate platforms, including Freqtrade, use Telegram to send alerts and accept commands for a bot you run yourself. The dangerous ones ask you to deposit funds with them, pay to "unlock" profits, or paste exchange API keys into a chat. That is how fraud scales. The CFTC's advisory on AI bots cites the Mirror Trading International case, in which roughly $1.7 billion in bitcoin was taken from at least 23,000 people.
How to start with a free AI trading bot for $0
This sequence keeps your first month at zero subscription cost and limits what can go wrong.
Pick one free platform
No-code: Bitsgap demo bots or Pionex. Coding: Freqtrade in dry-run mode. Do not open three platforms at once.
Run a demo or dry-run for two weeks
Use Bitsgap demo bots, Coinrule's demo exchange or Freqtrade dry-run. Write down what you expected and what happened.
Create a trade-only API key
Trading permission on, withdrawals off, IP whitelist on. Put only the bot's budget in a sub-account.
Go live with a small amount
An amount you could lose without changing your plans. Judge the bot on drawdown and fees, not on its best day.
Decide on paid plans with numbers
Only upgrade when the free tier blocks a tested strategy and the ROI calculator says the subscription pays for itself.
If you have never run a bot before, the AI crypto trading bots for beginners guide covers default settings and common mistakes. If you can code, open-source AI crypto trading bots compares Freqtrade, Jesse and Hummingbot in depth, and the Freqtrade and FreqAI review explains what the free machine learning really does.
Frequently asked questions
Is there a completely free AI crypto trading bot?
Freqtrade and Hummingbot are completely free open-source software; you only pay for a server and exchange fees. Pionex charges nothing for its bots but takes trading fees and holds your funds. Bitsgap, WunderTrading and Coinrule have free plans with caps. Nobody runs a strong bot on real money at zero cost.
Is Pionex really free?
The bots are free to use. Pionex earns from trading fees: 0.05% maker and taker on spot, and 0.02% maker / 0.05% taker on futures, as listed on its fee page in October 2026. A busy grid bot can generate hundreds of fills a month, so fees add up. Read our Pionex review for custody and licensing caveats.
What is the best free AI crypto trading bot for beginners?
For a beginner, Bitsgap's demo bots or Pionex's grid bots are the easiest place to start because nothing needs coding. Use demo mode or a small amount first. Our beginner bot guide has a first-week checklist and default settings.
Are free AI trading bots on Telegram safe?
Most are not. Telegram bots that promise AI profits commonly ask you to deposit funds, pay an "activation" fee or share exchange keys, and their results cannot be verified. Legitimate platforms use Telegram for notifications, not for taking custody. Check our AI trading scam guide before you engage.
Can I get a free AI EA for MT4 or MT5 to trade crypto?
You can find many, but MetaTrader is a forex and CFD platform. Crypto on MT4/MT5 usually means CFDs with a broker, not owning coins, and free "AI" EAs rarely come with verifiable live results. If you want crypto automation, a crypto-native bot or open-source Freqtrade is a cleaner route.
When should I upgrade from a free plan?
Upgrade only when the free plan blocks a strategy you have already tested and the expected profit clearly exceeds the subscription. A $29 plan costs 2.9% a month on $1,000, which most strategies cannot beat. Use the bot ROI calculator with your own numbers.
Do free bots have worse security?
Not necessarily. Security depends on how the platform handles keys and custody, not on the price. Bitsgap rejects withdrawal-enabled keys on every plan, and open-source bots keep keys on your own server. Pionex needs no key but holds your coins. Always use trade-only keys with withdrawals off.
