Key takeaways
- Copying with AI covers three different things: copying AI personas or models, copying bot strategies, and AI picking human traders for you.
- Bitget offers six AI personas inside GetAgent; MEXC lets you copy or reverse-copy LLMs like DeepSeek, Claude and Grok; eToro pairs CopyTrader with AI-driven Alpha Portfolios.
- Regulation differs sharply: eToro has a MiCA permit, Bitget is awaiting one, MEXC has none and has drawn several regulator warnings.
- Judge a copy target on maximum drawdown, track length, capital under management and leverage, not last month's return.
- Set a loss limit on every copy. Copying a leveraged trade copies its liquidation risk too.
Copy trading used to mean following a human with a good-looking profit chart. Now exchanges let you copy an AI persona, mirror a large language model's futures account, or let AI choose which traders to follow. That makes AI copy trading sound more scientific than it is. You are still handing your money's direction to a strategy you do not control and probably cannot fully see.
This guide separates the types, compares the main AI copy trading platforms, and gives you a checklist for evaluating any copy target. Facts were checked against official pages and dated press on 21 October 2026.
What is AI copy trading?
The term is used loosely, so it helps to split it into three models:
| Type | What you copy | Examples | Who decides |
|---|---|---|---|
| AI personas and models | A strategy run by an AI model or AI-built persona | Bitget GetAgent personas, MEXC AI-Masters | The model, inside the platform's rules |
| Copy trading AI bot strategies | A rule-based or bot strategy built by another user | Cryptohopper, Coinrule and WunderTrading marketplaces | The strategy author's rules |
| AI-assisted selection | Human traders or portfolios chosen or built with AI | eToro Alpha Portfolios and the Tori assistant | Humans, filtered by AI |
The difference matters for risk. A persona run by a model can change behaviour without warning, as the Alpha Arena results showed when models with identical prompts traded in completely different styles. A rule-based bot is predictable but may stop working when markets change. AI-selected portfolios still depend on the humans or assets inside them.
If you would rather set the rules yourself and let a model execute them, that is an agent rather than copy trading; see our guide to AI crypto trading agents.
AI copy trading platforms compared
"AI features" below means the AI element in the copy product itself, not an exchange's general chatbot. Where a platform's copy-trading details could not be confirmed from an official page this session, we say so.

Platform by platform: what the AI really does
Bitget: AI personas inside GetAgent
Bitget's GetAgent is an AI trading assistant with 50+ tools covering market data, news, technical analysis and execution, opened to all users in August 2025 with Free, Plus and Ultra tiers. On 1 December 2025 Bitget added six AI trading personas you can copy with one click: Steady Hedge, Majors Momentum, Altcoin Turbo, CTA Force, Infinite Grid and Dip Sniper. Bitget's announcement compared them with an unmodified DeepSeek benchmark. The names hint at very different risk levels; "Altcoin Turbo" and "Steady Hedge" are not the same product.
Bitget is not available in the US and several EU countries listed in its terms, including Austria, France and Germany, and its MiCA application was still pending when we checked. Our Bitget GetAgent review covers the assistant in detail.
MEXC: copy, or bet against, the LLMs
MEXC's AI-Masters copy trading, launched on 30 December 2025, lets you copy or reverse-copy perpetual futures accounts run by AI models including DeepSeek, ChatGPT, Gemini, Qwen, Claude and Grok. It is essentially Alpha Arena turned into a product. It sits in a six-tool AI suite alongside AI News Radar, Smart Candles and the MEXC AI agent; MEXC claims 1.57 million users for it.
eToro: CopyTrader with an AI layer
eToro built its business on CopyTrader, which fintech.global reports is also available in the US. In August 2025 it added the Tori AI companion and seven AI-driven Alpha Portfolios, and on 7 July 2026 it relaunched as an AI-first app with Tori acting as a proactive agent. eToro (Europe) Ltd holds a MiCA permit from CySEC. Crypto trades cost a flat 1% per buy and per sell plus the spread, which adds up quickly if the traders you copy trade often.
Bybit, KuCoin and Binance
All three run copy trading, but we could not confirm the AI elements from official pages this session, so we do not describe them as AI-driven copying. Bybit holds a MiCA licence through Bybit EU in Austria and offers TradeGPT, an LLM assistant for analysis and education; its copy-trading and bot pages did not load for us, so treat AI-copy claims as unverified. KuCoin offers futures copy trading on its official page and separately markets AI bots such as Spot Grid AI Plus; it holds MiCA authorisation through KuCoin EU for 29 EEA states, excluding Malta. Binance copy-trading details were not verified, and its EU services have been restricted since July 2026. Our exchanges with AI tools matrix tracks licences across platforms, and the Bybit TradeGPT review covers Bybit's assistant.
Copy trading AI bot strategies: the marketplaces
Bot platforms offer a different kind of copying: you subscribe to a strategy template or signal built by another user and run it on your own exchange account via API.
- Cryptohopper has a marketplace of strategies, templates and signals, plus paper trading and backtests. Plans start at $29/month; its "AI" ranks strategies by backtest results and comes only with the $129 Hero plan. Marketplace items are sold separately. See our Cryptohopper review.
- Coinrule offers 350+ templates and marketplace copy trading on top of its if-this-then-that rule builder, with a free Starter plan. It does not serve EU/EEA residents. See our Coinrule review.
- WunderTrading includes copy trading alongside signal, DCA and grid bots across 20 exchanges, with a lifetime free plan and paid tiers from $19/month.
The advantage here is control: your funds stay on your own exchange, you can read the strategy's rules, and you can stop it at any time. The downside is that a template's backtest is not a live track record. Our comparison of the best AI crypto trading bots covers these platforms in more depth.
How to evaluate a copy target
Leaderboards are sorted by recent return because that is what attracts copiers. Sort by risk instead. These are the numbers that matter, in order:
| Metric | What to look for | Red flag |
|---|---|---|
| Maximum drawdown | The largest peak-to-trough loss; lower is better | Drawdowns above 30–40% on a short record |
| Track length | Months of live trading across up and down markets | A few weeks, or only one market regime |
| Capital and copiers | The trader's own capital and stable copier funds | Tiny balance with huge percentage gains |
| Leverage | Low or no leverage, consistent sizing | High leverage or sudden size jumps |
| Trade frequency | A pace your fees can survive | Hundreds of small trades a week |
| Consistency | Steady monthly results | One huge month carrying the whole record |
Win rate is the most misleading figure on most profiles. A strategy that wins 90% of trades can still lose money if the losing 10% are large, which is common with martingale-style or no-stop strategies. Look at the equity curve and the worst month together.
Fees and profit share
Copy trading has three layers of cost, and they compound:
- Trading fees on every copied trade. A lead who trades often costs you more. On eToro, the flat 1% per crypto buy and per sell applies to every copied crypto trade.
- Profit share paid to the lead trader, usually a percentage of profits per settlement period. The percentage varies by platform and trader, so check it in the copy settings before you start.
- Subscriptions on bot marketplaces, such as Cryptohopper's monthly plans plus any paid strategies.
Slippage is the hidden fourth cost: your order fills after the lead's, often at a worse price, especially in thin altcoin markets. Use our trading bot ROI calculator to see how fees and subscriptions change the return you need just to break even.
Prefer to hold rather than copy?
Copy trading suits people who want exposure to someone else's strategy. If you would rather buy and hold the assets yourself on a regulated venue, CEX.IO is a long-running option: in business since 2013, a FinCEN-registered MSB with money transmitter licences in 39 US states plus DC, and FCA-registered in the UK. It does not offer copy trading.
Registrations checked October 2026 on the company's legal pages. Availability depends on your country; crypto is high-risk.

The risks of copying AI models and AI-picked traders
Why people use it
- Exposure to a strategy without building one
- Easy to start and stop with small amounts
- AI personas and models make the strategy style explicit
- Reverse copying lets you bet against a model you distrust
What can go wrong
- Leveraged futures copies can liquidate within hours
- Short track records, especially for AI personas
- Lag and slippage make your results worse than the lead's
- Weakly regulated venues add custody and withdrawal risk
One more risk sits outside the platforms: fake "AI copy" schemes that ask you to deposit with them directly and promise fixed daily returns. Those are not copy trading at all. Our AI crypto trading scams guide shows how to spot them, and the CFTC advisory on AI trading bots lists the classic warning signs.
Before-you-copy checklist
Check the platform serves you legally
Read the terms for your country. Bitget and MEXC exclude the US; MEXC also excludes the UK and is leaving the Netherlands.
Pick the type of copying
AI persona or model, a bot strategy on your own exchange, or an AI-selected portfolio. Each has different risks.
Read the risk numbers first
Maximum drawdown, track length, leverage and capital before return. Skip anyone without several months of live history.
Find the total cost
Trading fees, profit share and subscriptions. Check the profit-share percentage in the copy settings.
Allocate a small, fixed amount
Use a dedicated balance or sub-account. Start small enough that a total loss would not change your plans.
Set a stop on the copy
Use the platform's maximum-loss or stop-copy setting, and cap leverage if the platform allows it.
Review monthly
Compare your actual results with the lead's. If drawdown exceeds your limit or the style changes, stop copying.
If you want to look beyond copying, our AI futures bots guide explains leverage and liquidation in more detail, and the Bitget GetAgent review shows how an AI assistant can support your own decisions instead of replacing them.
Frequently asked questions
What is AI copy trading?
It is copy trading where AI plays a role in the strategy you mirror. That can mean copying a strategy run by an AI model or persona (Bitget GetAgent personas, MEXC AI-Masters), or using AI to rank and select human traders or build portfolios (eToro's Alpha Portfolios). You still take the full market risk of the positions you copy.
Is AI copy trading profitable?
Sometimes, for some periods, and there is no reliable public data showing it beats simply holding. Performance figures shown on copy-trading leaderboards are past results over short windows. In the Alpha Arena live-money test of AI models, most runs lost money. Judge any copy target on maximum drawdown and track length, and never copy with money you cannot afford to lose.
Which exchange is best for AI copy trading?
It depends on where you live. eToro holds a MiCA permit via CySEC and offers CopyTrader plus AI-driven Alpha Portfolios, which suits EU users who want regulation. Bitget has the most developed AI personas but is not available in the US and is still awaiting MiCA authorisation. MEXC lets you copy LLM traders but has no MiCA licence and has drawn regulator warnings.
Can you lose money copy trading?
Yes, and quickly, especially on futures. When you copy a leveraged position, your account takes the same percentage loss, and a sharp move can liquidate it. Copying also adds lag and slippage, so your result can be worse than the lead's. Set a stop-loss or maximum loss for each copy and avoid high-leverage targets.
How much does copy trading cost?
You usually pay normal trading fees plus a profit share to the lead trader on profitable periods. Check the exact percentage in each platform's copy settings before starting, as it varies by platform and trader. eToro charges a flat 1% per crypto buy and per sell plus the spread. Bot marketplaces such as Cryptohopper charge a subscription and sell some strategies separately.
What is reverse copy trading?
Reverse copying takes the opposite side of every trade a target makes. MEXC offers it for AI models in its AI-Masters programme. The logic is to bet against a model you think is consistently wrong. It is still a leveraged bet on someone else's decisions, and a losing model can start winning at any time.
Is copy trading legal in the US and UK?
Copy trading itself is legal in many countries, but availability varies by platform and product. eToro's CopyTrader is reported to be available in the US, while Bitget and MEXC exclude US users and MEXC also excludes the UK. Check the platform's terms for your country, and see our guide on whether AI crypto trading is legal and safe.
