Key takeaways

  • Bybit TradeGPT (September 2023) is a ChatGPT-based market-analysis and education assistant. It explains; it does not execute.
  • Bybit's bots (Spot Grid, Futures Grid, DCA, Futures Martingale, Futures Combo) are rule-based, with optional AI-recommended settings.
  • Bybit EU GmbH holds a MiCA licence from Austria's FMA (29 May 2025), so EU users have a regulated route.
  • On 21 February 2025 attackers took about $1.5 billion from a Bybit ETH cold wallet through a compromised Safe{Wallet} interface. The FBI attributed it to North Korea.
  • Bybit says it restored 1:1 reserves within 72 hours. The lesson for users is about custody, not about TradeGPT.

Bybit TradeGPT was one of the first AI assistants built into a major crypto exchange. It arrived in September 2023, a few months after Bybit's ToolsGPT plugin, and promised market analysis and trading education in plain English. Three years on, it is still a useful explainer, and still a long way from a trading bot.

This page covers what Bybit AI tools really do, how the bots and copy trading fit in, and the two facts that matter most when you choose Bybit: its MiCA licence and the largest exchange hack on record. Sources are Bybit's help centre, press coverage and the FBI, checked in October 2026.

What Bybit TradeGPT is, and what it is not

TradeGPT is a chat assistant built on ChatGPT and aimed at market questions. You can ask it why a coin moved, what a funding rate means, how a technical indicator works, or for a quick read on a pair's recent behaviour. Cointelegraph described it at launch as a tool for market analysis; Bybit positioned it as education as much as analysis.

What TradeGPT is not: a signal service with a track record. Bybit has published no performance data for its suggestions, and an LLM summarising price action has no special insight into what happens next. That is not a flaw unique to Bybit. Our evidence review, do AI crypto trading bots work?, explains why the same caution applies to every AI trading claim.

You may also see reports of a newer, built-in Bybit AI agent that can act across spot, futures and earn products. Third-party coverage (Cryptowisser) reported a launch, but we could not confirm the details on Bybit's own pages during our checks, so we do not review it here.

How to get real value from TradeGPT

The best way to use Bybit AI is as a fast tutor and a second opinion. Some practical habits:

  • Ask "why", not "what to buy". "Why did SOL funding turn negative today?" gets a more useful answer than "Should I long SOL?"
  • Make it show its data. Ask which timeframe, which indicator values and which news it used, then check them on the chart.
  • Use it to stress-test your own plan. Describe your entry, stop and target, and ask what would invalidate the trade.
  • Never use it to pick leverage. Position size and liquidation price are your job. Our futures bots guide explains why liquidation maths beats any AI label.

Bybit trading bots and the "AI" settings

Bybit's bot suite is where automation actually happens. The help centre lists five main types, all rule-based:

BotHow it worksMain risk
Spot Gridbybit.com ↗Buys as price falls and sells as it rises within your range; up to 50 bots at once; only spot fees on filled ordersPrice leaves the range; no liquidation risk
Futures GridSame logic on USDT perpetuals with leverage; long, short or neutral modesLiquidation if price breaks the range
DCABuys a fixed amount at intervals from 10 minutes to 4 weeksBuying all the way down in a long decline
Futures MartingaleAdds larger positions as price moves against you, closes at a profit targetHigh leverage multiplies losses fast
Futures ComboHolds preset long and short allocations and rebalances on driftCross margin: one liquidation closes the whole bot

The "AI" label applies to setup, not to trading. You can pick AI-recommended parameters (range, grid count, risk controls) or an "Easy Bot" mode that fills them in automatically. After that, the bot follows its rules. That is fine, and often safer than a model making live decisions, but it is not machine learning. If you want to understand the difference, our explainer on how AI crypto trading bots work lays out the levels.

Bybit copy trading and AI

Bybit runs copy trading with a leaderboard of traders you can follow, and you can share your own bots for others to copy. That is human copy trading with ranking tools, not copying an AI model. We could not verify on Bybit's official pages how, or whether, AI is used to rank traders, so we do not claim it.

If "Bybit copy trading AI" is what brought you here, the honest answer is that Bitget and MEXC are further along: Bitget lets you copy six AI personas inside GetAgent, and MEXC's AI-Masters lets you copy LLM traders. Whichever you pick, judge a strategy by its maximum drawdown and the length of its record. Our AI copy trading guide lists the checks.

Bybit's MiCA licence in Austria

On 29 May 2025, Bybit EU GmbH received a MiCA crypto-asset service provider licence from Austria's Financial Market Authority and set up its European headquarters in Vienna. The licence can be passported across the EEA. For EU users this is a meaningful advantage over Binance, which withdrew its MiCA application in June 2026, and over MEXC, which has none.

A licence does not prevent hacks, as the next section shows, but it does mean capital, governance and client-asset rules apply to the EU entity, and there is a regulator to complain to. Check that you are onboarding with Bybit EU if you live in the EEA. For availability in other regions, check Bybit's terms before you sign up.

On 21 February 2025, attackers drained about $1.5 billion in ETH and stETH from one of Bybit's Ethereum cold wallets. It remains the largest theft from a crypto exchange on record. Five days later, on 26 February, the FBI issued a public service announcement attributing it to North Korea, naming the activity "TraderTraitor". Forensic firms including Sygnia and Verichains linked it to the Lazarus Group, of which TraderTraitor is commonly described as a subgroup.

The attack did not break Bybit's own servers in the usual sense. The wallet was a multisig run through Safe{Wallet}, and attackers compromised Safe's web front end so that the signing screen showed a routine transfer while the actual transaction handed control of the wallet to them. Bybit's signers approved what they saw. It was a supply-chain attack on the interface between people and keys.

How Bybit responded

According to Bybit's own press release, it processed over 350,000 withdrawal requests within 12 hours, and client activity returned to pre-hack levels within 24 hours. Bybit said it restored a 1:1 reserve ratio for in-scope assets within 72 hours, supported by a Hacken proof-of-reserves audit published on 23 February 2025 showing BTC, ETH, SOL, USDT and USDC above 100% collateral. The gap was closed through loans, whale deposits and purchases of ETH, with on-chain trackers putting the total at around 445,000 ETH (reports vary).

What the hack means for Bybit users

Three practical lessons, and none of them is "avoid Bybit" on its own:

  • Cold storage is not a guarantee. The stolen funds were in a cold wallet. The weak point was the signing process. Any exchange can be hit this way, which is why you should not keep more on an exchange than you trade.
  • Response matters as much as prevention. Bybit kept withdrawals open and closed the gap quickly. That is the behaviour you want to see; compare it with exchanges that froze withdrawals or never disclosed incidents. Our exchange matrix lists incidents across 15 platforms.
  • Phishing follows hacks. After big incidents, fake "Bybit compensation" sites and support accounts appear. Bybit will not ask for your password or seed phrase. See our scams guide for the patterns.

Spreading custody across more than one venue?

After the Bybit hack, many traders split their holdings. If you want a second account on a long-running exchange, CEX.IO has operated since 2013, publishes FinCEN MSB and state licence details for 39 US states plus DC and FCA registration in the UK, and says it uses multi-sig wallets and cold storage. It has no AI tools, so keep TradeGPT or your favourite model for research.

Verdict on Bybit TradeGPT and Bybit AI

What works

  • TradeGPT is a convenient built-in explainer for market questions and trading terms
  • Full rule-based bot suite with AI-suggested settings and a Spot Grid that cannot be liquidated
  • MiCA licence from Austria's FMA for EU users
  • Fast, transparent response to the 2025 hack, with a Hacken-audited reserve report

Watch out for

  • TradeGPT does not trade and has no published track record
  • No verified AI-model copy trading on Bybit's own pages
  • The largest exchange hack on record, even if customers were made whole
  • Leveraged bot types (Martingale, Combo) are easy to misuse

Bybit TradeGPT is a reasonable assistant, not a reason to choose an exchange. The bots are solid and the MiCA licence is a real plus for Europeans. The 2025 hack is a reminder to keep exchange balances lean, not a disqualifier given how Bybit handled it. If you want an exchange whose AI can actually act, look at Bitget GetAgent or Binance AI Pro; if you want independent automation, start with our list of the best AI crypto trading bots. Frequently asked questions

What is Bybit TradeGPT?

TradeGPT is Bybit's AI market-analysis and education assistant, launched in September 2023 and built on ChatGPT. You ask it about a coin, a chart pattern or a market move and it answers in plain English. It explains and suggests; it does not place trades for you.

Is Bybit TradeGPT free?

Bybit presents TradeGPT as a feature for its users and has not published a separate subscription price for it; check in the app for your region. Its value is in quick explanations, not in trade signals, so treat any idea it gives you as a starting point to verify on the chart.

Does Bybit have AI trading bots?

Bybit's bots are rule-based: Spot Grid, Futures Grid, DCA, Futures Martingale and Futures Combo. The AI part is that you can accept AI-recommended settings for a bot instead of choosing the range and grid count yourself. The bot then follows fixed rules.

Is Bybit safe after the 2025 hack?

Bybit lost about $1.5 billion in February 2025 when attackers compromised a third-party wallet interface. It said it processed over 350,000 withdrawals within 12 hours and restored 1:1 reserves within 72 hours, backed by a Hacken audit. Customers were not left short, but the event shows that even cold wallets carry risk. Keep only what you trade on any exchange.

Is Bybit licensed in Europe?

Yes. Bybit EU GmbH received a MiCA licence from Austria's Financial Market Authority on 29 May 2025 and set up its EU headquarters in Vienna. The licence can be passported across the EEA. Check that you are signing up with the EU entity if you live in Europe.

Can I copy AI traders on Bybit?

Bybit has copy trading with a leaderboard of human traders, and you can share or follow bots. We could not verify an AI-model copy product on Bybit's own pages. If copying AI models is what you want, Bitget and MEXC offer that; see our AI copy trading guide.
